TPA to process 80,000 travelers daily during World Series weekend

The airport expects a surge of visitors for the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays games, triple the typical late-October volume.

Tampa International Airport officials project that nearly 80,000 people will pass through the terminal on both Sunday and Monday. This daily figure marks a sharp increase from the 55,000 to 60,000 passengers the facility usually handles during this time of year. The expected volume aligns more closely with peak spring break and holiday travel periods than with standard late-autumn traffic.

The surge in arrivals coincides with the World Series, which features the Milwaukee Brewers against the Tampa Bay Rays. Fans are arriving from across the United States, including travelers from Alaska, Texas, and Maryland. Some Rays supporters are also returning to the area to watch the games in person. The influx has created a noticeable rise in activity at an airport that typically experiences slower periods during this month.

Josh Walker, a long-time Brewers fan residing in Alaska, traveled to the region after receiving the opportunity to attend the games. He described the decision as a spur of the moment choice. "I never thought I would see the day, so I had to make the jump and come all the way down here to see the game," Walker said. He noted that the late game times allow him to explore the Tampa area during the day.

Sandy Gorski, who grew up in Milwaukee but has lived in the Dallas area for 17 years, also made the trip. She decided to travel to Tampa for Game 4 after her sister's family used their season tickets back home. "I told her, 'you know what? I'm going to go to Tampa, and I'm going to go to Game 4,'" Gorski said.

Tourism leaders in the Tampa Bay region state that the World Series is providing a financial boost to local businesses. Santiago Corrada, president and CEO of Visit Tampa Bay, said the games are adding to the region's existing tourism activity. He acknowledged that much of the baseball spotlight is focused on Pinellas County across the bay. "Rising tides lift all boats and the rising tide for this year's World Series is there in Pinellas County," Corrada said. He described the World Series as a "cherry on top" of the region's other events.

Corrada noted that major events create additional demand for workers in the hospitality industry, including restaurants, hotels, museums, and theaters. Visit St. Pete-Clearwater describes the games as an economic injection into the local economy. Major League Baseball estimates that postseason games can generate up to $7 million in economic impact for the region per game. The next scheduled games will take place on Sunday and Monday at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.
